Michael Huertas NJ Record Male Athlete of the Week
The Record Male Athlete of the Week scored on runs of 70, 55 and 70 yards in the first half. He added a 75-yard touchdown run after halftime.
Huertas, who gained his yards on just 17 carries, also was a game-changer at free safety by intercepting two passes.
When asked if he ever comes off the field, he laughs and says, "Not a lot. Just on kickoffs … kickoffs and punts."
On a night of amazing runs, he said the third touchdown will always stand out in his mind. Everything unfolded as it does in practice.
"All my linemen were blocking perfectly and the hole was big and I just ran straight," Huertas said. "It was a straight [isolation] play right up the middle. Without my linemen, I wouldn’t have scored on that play."
It was made more special because he had his rooting section at the game on Belleville’s home field. Huertas’ parents, sisters, cousins, friends – they were all there to cheer him on.
They’ve seen the hard work he’s put in, all the double sessions and before-school workouts. But when asked if he set any personal goals for the season, he shakes his head no.
"I just want to win the games," Huertas said. "That’s all."
Also nominated: James Draney of Bogota for cross-country; Frank Quatrone of Hasbrouck Heights, Dayshawn Cunningham of Lodi, Anthony Lisanti of Lyndhurst, Hunter Fortier of Passaic Valley, Saadiq Pitts of Clifton, Joe Lesho of Becton and Christian Correa of New Milford for football.
